Wild Shots Outreach Newsletter - June 2018

We were saddened to learn that Wild Shots Outreach ambassador Sam Nzima died in May. Sam was an inspiration and will be sadly missed. He would be delighted that some of the young photographers he inspired are doing so well. Queen Manyike (featured in February’s newsletter) passed her Level 1 guide certification, and the boys at NYE Photography are growing their small enterprise very successfully

Sam Nzima

Sam Nzima. Sam, seen here with Tebogo & Madam Malope from N P Mathebela High School, took images that changed the world. He was a great supporter of the WSO programme and loved being with our young photographers. Even in his 80’s he insisted on travelling with the children and staying in backpacker accommodation with them on a WSO residential trip. Sam opened the first ever Wild Shots Outreach exhibition in 2016. We cherish his poem “God is with me” from our poetry workshop with Athol Williams.

Ricky gets published!

Ricky Tibane of Phendulani High School took a beautiful image on his game drive with Wild Shots Outreach. The image was selected by Nature Picture Library in the UK and Ricky’s story was published by GEOlino magazine in Europe. Nature PL were kind enough to send us a hard copy of the magazine which we presented to Ricky, seen here with his teacher, James Mathebula. All of Ricky’s school mates and teachers are thrilled that Ricky and Wild Shots Outreach have put Phendulani on the map in Europe!

On assignment

A team of some of our most experienced young photographers were given a commercial assignment with the Palabora Foundation Trust (thank you, Di Tipping Wood). The assignment involved taking images of employees and departmental teams for the Annual Report. Wisani, Vusi, Rifumo and Lucky did incredibly well, being organised, professional, courteous and getting the shots required. They have since been commissioned for another commercial assignment, documenting litter issues in the communities around Ludlow and White City.
